December 21, 2008
As of last week, it seems companies producing zero-calorie products will have zero excuse to continue using synthetic sweeteners aspartame, saccharin and Splenda.
Following political pressure from industry giants Coca-Cola and Pepsi, The FDA gave a long-awaited nod to two stevia-based sweeteners developed by PepsiCo and the Coca-Cola Company. According to an article in the New York Times, the FDA now says they have “no objection to rebiana having GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status” as a general-purpose sweetener for food and beverages. There’s so much we don’t know about sweeteners, but the Association does have the accumulated experience of many thousands of families. Combining experience with what we do know, here’s a suggested guideline for choosing sweeteners:
Acceptable choices
The following are healthy choices:

Sugar – granulated, confectioner’s, or brown
Cane sugar crystals
Turbinado and various raw sugars
Honey, Molasses, Pure maple syrup
Rice syrup and similar syrups

Got (Aspartame in Your) Milk???
Dairy’s two biggest trade associations have jointly written the Food and Drug Administration requesting that “non-nutritive sweeteners” be included in federal standards of identity for 17 different dairy products, including fluid milk. What’s the logic behind this request to alter federal standards by National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Assn?
NMPF explains that Senator Tom Harkin’s (D-IA) staff on the Senate Agriculture Committee wants to limit the calories in the milk portion of the School Lunch Program. Since flavored (sweetened) milk ...

To: Richard F. Daines, M.D., Commissioner of Health, copy to Governor David Paterson

Dear Doctor Daines:
My email box has been swamped with comments on Governor Paterson’s proposed obesity tax on non-diet sodas. How well it is known “If you want to get fat NutraSweet is where its at”, and “If it says diet, don’t buy it.” It is aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet, E951, Spoonful, NutraTaste, Canderel, Benevia, and anything else they can think to call it) as ...
