Stevia Gets U.S. FDA Approval?

As of last week, it seems companies producing zero-calorie products will have zero excuse to continue using synthetic sweeteners aspartame, saccharin and Splenda.
Following political pressure from industry giants Coca-Cola and Pepsi, The FDA gave a long-awaited nod to two stevia-based sweeteners developed by PepsiCo and the Coca-Cola Company. According to an article in the New York Times, the FDA now says they have “no objection to rebiana having GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status” as a general-purpose sweetener for food and beverages. Which Sweetener to Use?

There’s so much we don’t know about sweeteners, but the Association does have the accumulated experience of many thousands of families. Combining experience with what we do know, here’s a suggested guideline for choosing sweeteners:
Acceptable choices
The following are healthy choices:

Sugar – granulated, confectioner’s, or brown
Cane sugar crystals
Turbinado and various raw sugars
Honey, Molasses, Pure maple syrup
Rice syrup and similar syrups
Stevia (an herbal no-calorie sweetener found in the supplements section of your supermarket or …

Xylitol – Toxic to Dogs

According to a new press release by the ASPCA, Xylitol is extremely toxic to our canine companions – even in small quantities.
The good news is that, in growing numbers, we’re becoming more conscientious about our health and looking for alternatives to the likes of aspartame and Splenda. The bad news is that, instead of turning toward more organic options, we’re turning toward other low-cal options, like Xylitol.

Did the FDA Lift the Ban on Stevia?

It appears the FDA are maintaining their ban of the use of Stevia as a “sweetener” (you can still buy it as a “supplement”). However, it looks like, once again, they caved to big business and allowed them to use an extract from the root without proper testing.
